Tips to Keep off the Holiday Pounds



Being a mom, I find it incredibly easy to NOT do all those things that had once been a habit to keep a nice figure. Maybe it’s the tiredness, maybe it is the ease of having snacks I’d never otherwise purchase, whatever it is, it’s added about 40 extra pounds. Ugg.

Now to loose those pounds. But the holidays are coming and egg nog is a killer. Kids bring home treats they made for you… watching every bite to be sure you love it. Co-workers bring in chocolate or use you as a guinea pig for their new holiday recipes. Even Costco has whipped out treats for their sample tables, which are now available even on a Tuesday morning due to the holiday shoppers.

So how can we keep from adding more pounds? Walk away is a great strategy. One I often use without much problem, but when you’re sitting down to dinner… what then? Portion control, yes. But sometimes even that fails me. My only solution to my lack of willpower against mashed potatoes or another helping of lentil rice (I love this yummy one for a quick lunch or dinner side) is a meal replacement and lots of water- with flavor.

Some quick ideas for some yummy drinks to keep you on track and help you NOT gain any more weight. And hopefully, still keep on track with LOSING weight.

Flavor Your Water


While drinking plain water or lemon water is always the best choice I can never seem to get it down. Adding in a mint tea tastes so much better to me than the traditional weight loss green tea. I water mine down to tolerable, add some ice and fresh mint leaves from the garden. Amazon has a great add-on mint tea order here. For an added kick add some grated ginger and a slice of cucumber. Other great water additions: berries, oranges, apple slices, basil, melons, cilantro


Smoothies are an excellent way to pack in all those missing nutrients and vitamins. It is my cheater way to get it all in and cut back the calories. For those on the go, for work or school, its quick and easy. For moms like me who don’t like eating breakfast or miss it cause of the morning rush, it’s perfect! I use smoothies all year round, sneaking greens in on my kids, but most especially when trying to lose weight. I use Alpha Lean White Chocolate Raspberry Protein with some lactose-free milk and some ice. It’s one of the few that I can tolerate the taste on a morning basis. I feel full, I don’t feel cheated and I don’t think about eating until lunch. And I’ve lost 2lbs in 9 days by just using this.

My Favorite Smoothie



1/2 cup frozen strawberries

1/2 cup frozen raspberries

1/2 cup frozen blueberries

1 cup plain greek yogurt

1 1/4 cups milk of choice

1 Tbs. honey

1/2 tsp. vanilla

green addition like this,  or this.  You get the idea.

Choose low-fat, skim or other annoying long terms to say “low calorie”


Holiday coffee is a necessary of the season, I mean, how else are we to marathon the mall or go to a bazillion stores and stand in endless lines without one in hand? By being annoying. Double long shot grande in a venti cup half calf double cupped no sleeve salted caramel mocha latte with 2 pumps of vanilla substitute 2 pumps of white chocolate mocha for mocha and substitute 2 pumps of hazelnut for toffee nut half whole milk and half breve with no whipped cream extra foam with light ice well stirred…. oh by the way, I have a free reward. Okay, maybe not that annoying. But substitution is the name of the game with portion control it’s neighbor. Normally order a venti? Drop it to a grande. Normally order a grande? Go with the tall. Normally order a tall? uh, well, stick with the tall.

Other tips to keep off the pounds are to add in 10 minutes to your normal workout or better yet START working out, cut your portions on all meals, rinse your mouth with water after eating a treat to keep from grabbing another, don’t eat distracted, and did I mention to grab a smoothie for breakfast?
